Even More Easy Ways to Protect the Environment
We’re big fans of the environment here at Mom’s Gone Nerdy, so much so that one post on protecting the environment just wasn’t enough! There are many small ways you can make a difference to this world, so why not try out these ideas too?
Offset your carbon footprint
If you are a family who travel or use a lot of gas, it may be worth calculating how much of a carbon footprint you have left and trying to offset it. You can do this in a number of ways, and there are several websites, such as carbonfootprint.com, which allow you to calculate your emissions and choose a worthy cause to support in order to offset it. You can do this in a number of ways, from planting trees to supporting sustainability charities.
Update your air conditioning
If your AC system is old, it is likely that there are opportunities for you to upgrade and be more efficient. As of 2006, a new standard went into effect which requires residential air conditioners to have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio of 13 or higher. The higher the rating, the more efficient the system – meaning that you save money and use less energy to cool your home. If you are looking to replace your system, Kenn Starr and Home Comfort USA Stuff a Truck Event, offer great prices.
Grow your own
Whether you have a large garden, a small patio, a balcony or a windowsill space, there is always room to grow some veggies or herbs at home. Beans, beets, carrots, chives and cilantro are just a few examples of edibles which can be grown in your window or a small space. If you have a larger garden, tomatoes are easy to grow in pots, as are corn, squash, and zucchini.
Here’s an idea, instead of stopping by your local coffee shop and buying a cup of Joe in a paper cup, why not invest in a plastic reusable and fill it with delicious caffeine before you’ve even left the house? Or how about filling up water bottles from the tap instead of constantly buying plastic and throwing them away? Many coffee shops also offer discounts for those who ask for a drink in their reusable cup, so the benefits are much more than you would imagine!
Cook from scratch
We’re all guilty of ordering takeout every now and then, and there is no shame in indulging from time to time. But if you and your family have a habit of ordering in more than you cook, you may need to reassess. By doing this, you are bringing more and more one-use plastics into your house, as well as the fuel that the delivery boy is using. By cooking at home, you reduce both the gas and plastic, and will tend to eat much healthier meals which aren’t full of sugar!
Eat less meat
Meat tastes good, sure, but it isn’t cheap, and it isn’t great for the environment either. 70% of the Amazon has been destroyed to cater for livestock which then goes on to be eaten. Meat production also results in more emissions than any other protein! If this is a hard task for your family, try a Meat Free Monday, or aim to be weekday vegetarians who only eat meat on weekends.
